Facility Usage Guidelines

The following rules and regulations governing the use of all recreational facilities have been created to provide equal opportunity and protect the rights of each participant. Staff are employed to interpret and enforce the usage guidelines, as well as posted room regulations. As a member of the university community, participants have a responsibility to understand and abide by these guidelines and other rulings.

Activity Area Amplified Sound Devices

Devices that produce amplified sound are permitted in group activity areas; however, Recreational Sports staff maintains the right to regulate content and volume.  Participants must be considerate of others when utilizing amplified sound.

Alcohol/Drugs/Tobacco

Alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, and illegal drugs are prohibited.

Attire
  • Proper athletic attire must be worn when participating:
  • Wear non-marking athletic shoes in all activity areas (except pools, martial arts, and locker rooms).
  • Wear swimsuits in pools.
  • Shirts that cover the entire back and shoulders are encouraged to keep equipment clean and dry.
  • Closed-toe shoes are required in weight/conditioning rooms.
  • Goggles and protective eyewear are recommended.

Racquetball Challenge Court
  • Gregory Gym (Court #8): 3-8pm (M-F)
  • Recreational Sports Center (Court #6): All Day
Handball Challenge Courts
  • Gregory Gym (Court #9): All Day
  • Recreational Sports Center (Court #5): 3-8pm (M-F)
Basketball/Indoor Volleyball/Sand Volleyball Challenge Court Guidelines
  • A challenge for the next game is issued verbally by waiting players. No one presently in a game may call "next game."
  • Only one player needs to be present to issue a challenge.
  • Losing players are not eligible for the next game unless other players are unavailable.
  • Upon winning three consecutive games, the winning team must exit the playing area if other players are waiting to play.
Children

Children may participate in accordance with current regulations. Children age five and over are not permitted in the locker room of the opposite sex. Family changing rooms are available.

Conduct

The use of university facilities is a privilege, and participants are expected to be good citizens and respect the rights of others. Individuals who engage in unacceptable or irresponsible behavior may have their access to facilities revoked or modified indefinitely and/or be subject to further university disciplinary action.

Eligibility

The following individuals are eligible to access RecSports facilities:

Entrance/Exit

Entry and exit of facilities must be through the designated main entrance and exit. Individuals entering or exiting through non-designated doors are subject to disciplinary action.

Facility Closures

Facilities may be closed and/or reservations canceled when warranted (i.e., special events, maintenance projects, inclement weather).

Faculty/Staff Weight Room

The Faculty/Staff Weight Room located in the basement level of Gregory Gym is reserved for faculty and staff who have purchased a RecSports membership. Individuals enrolled in classes at the University are ineligible to use this space regardless of their employment status; this includes undergraduate and graduate students who are employed at the University. Food and Drink

Food and drink are permitted in designated areas only. Glass containers are prohibited at all facilities.

Guests

Guests of current students or members must purchase a guest pass and present a state-issued photo ID or passport to use the facilities.

Guidelines

Posted room guidelines must be observed. Verbal instructions issued by staff must be followed.

Informal Recreation

Unreserved activity areas are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with challenge and shared usage rules applying. The designated informal recreation activity will take priority over other uses. Basketball courts at GRE, RSC, and CCF are designated for full-court, 5-on-5 games.

Membership ID Cards

Participants must possess current membership identification and provide it to staff upon request. ID cards are non-transferable and are for the exclusive use of the person named on the ID. Privileges may be revoked if an ID card is presented by anyone other than the rightful owner. RecSports reserves the right to request identification at any time.

Currently enrolled students and RecSports members who have lost or forgotten their RecSports ID or UT ID card may gain access to the facilities by utilizing My RecSports or the forgotten ID System. The forgotten ID system may only be used three times per semester. 

Organized Activities

Coaching, instruction, and organized activities other than those approved by Recreational Sports are prohibited.

Assets owned by UT Austin or any other state entity are to be used for official state purposes only. The personal use of any UT Austin asset is normally prohibited. University resources (facilities, equipment, other property, and personnel) shall not be used for personal gain or for other than official university business. Learn more

Personal Belongings

Secure all valuables. RecSports is not responsible for lost or stolen property. Rental and day-use lockers are available. Storage of handguns is not allowed in lockers at RecSports facilities.

Personal Listening Devices

Headphones are required for individuals utilizing personal listening devices.

Personal Recording Devices

Recreational Sports requires that UT faculty, staff, students, and university departments interested in photographing or filming in any of the facilities complete a request form at least 3 business days before the requested date(s). Commercial and/or non-UT affiliated photography and filming requests must be directed to University Marketing and Communications. Personal Transportation Devices

Bikes, skateboards, and other personal transportation devices other than those used for mobility impairments are prohibited inside Recreational Sports facilities.

Pets

Pets other than service dogs are prohibited at all RecSports facilities.

Pool Policies
  • Wear appropriate swimwear.
  • Glass containers are prohibited.
  • Use U.S. Coast Guard-approved and RecSports-provided personal flotation devices and equipment only. 
  • Running, rough play, and personal conduct endangering the safety of self or others is prohibited.
  • Do not hang on lane lines. 
  • Circle swim counter-clockwise in lanes designated for lap swimming.
  • Limit long-distance underwater swimming to one length.
  • Non-swimmers must be within arm’s reach of the supervising swimmer at all times.
  • Outdoor facilities may close during inclement weather.  When the Lightning Warning System sounds, all patrons must exit the outdoor facilities until the “All-Clear” signal sounds.
  • Child Members (age 17 and under) may use the facility during specified times. Parent or guardian must remain in immediate activity area to supervise children at all times.
  • Diaper changing is restricted to the changing stations in the restrooms.
  • Swim diapers or plastic pants are required for children who are not toilet trained.
Racquetball/Handball Challenge Court Guidelines
  • A challenge for the next game is issued verbally by waiting players. No one presently in a game may call "next game."
  • The winner of each game will call out the next challenger's name. That challenger must play the winner or lose his/her place in line.
  • A waiting challenger who leaves the gallery area to play on another court will lose his/her place in line.
  • If no challenges are made, players on the court may continue to play on a first-come, first-served basis until a challenge is made.
  • Warm-up time is limited to three minutes.
  • All challenge games are played to fifteen points (win by one point).
  • A player may win a maximum of three consecutive games. After a player has "retired" (after three wins), the next two players on the sign-up sheet will start the next challenge game.
Spa Policies

Individuals who are pregnant, elderly, or suffering from heart disease, high or low blood pressure, diabetes, or epilepsy should not use the spa without prior medical consultation and permission.

  • Do not use the spa if the water temperature is above 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Centigrade).
  • Youth Members (age 17 and under) may not use the spa.
  • Maximum occupancy: 20
 
Spectators

Spectators must sign in with a government-issued photo ID to watch scheduled events. Spectators may not observe informal recreation activities.

Strollers

Strollers are prohibited in the weight room, cardio/stretching areas, gymnasiums, or indoor track.
